The 'Centennial Pigs' sculpture celebrates the first 100 years of State College since its incorporation in 1896. An 1894 photograph of pig rooting for food on E. College Ave served as inspiration for the State College Centennial Commission to choose the theme of 'pigs' to honor State College's early agrarian history. Until 1987, livestock were permitted to roam freely around town. Pedestrians have rubbed the pig's snout, possibly for luck, since the bronze pig statue unveiling in 1996.
